Early BRIC summit wraps up

Brazil, Russia, India and China wrapped up their second-ever BRIC summit here after sharpening their call for reforms of international institutions and discussing a push to impose more UN sanctions on Iran. The gathering of the world's top emerging economies Thursday was truncated and brought forward one day to ensure the participation of Chinese President Hu Jintao, who announced he had to race home to oversee the response to the quake. "Brazil, Russia, India and China have a fundamental role in the construction of a fairer international order," the summit's host, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, told a closing media conference. Advertisement: Story continues below Lula, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh all extended their sympathies to Hu and the Chinese people after an earthquake struck northwestern China Wednesday, killing 760 people. The Chinese president, who flew back to Beijing after the summit to handle what he called "a huge calamity," thanked the leaders for their "solidarity and sympathy." Singh called the summit "very successful" and described the BRIC grouping as key to "contributing to world economic growth and prosperity." Medvedev said the meeting showed that the BRIC format is maturing "and allows us to not only coordinate our efforts but to also make concrete decisions." A joint statement emphasized the group's intent to see a "multipolar, equitable and democratic world order" that would result from a shake-up of the United Nations and global financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund and World Bank to better reflect the aspirations of their emerging economies. It also spoke of "the importance of maintaining relative stability of major reserve currencies and sustainability of fiscal policies in order Rosetta Stone Korean to achieve a strong, long-term balanced economic growth." That vague clause appeared to refer to China's reluctance to unlink its yuan from the US dollar -- a policy that has boosted China's exports but raised cries of unfair currency manipulation by countries including the United States. Missing from the statement was any mention of Iran, even though a push by Western nations to obtain more UN sanctions against the Islamic republic figured strongly in several meetings on the sidelines of the BRIC meeting. A trilateral summit between Brazil, India and South Africa held just before the BRIC summit agreed that more diplomacy was required in the international standoff with Iran over its controversial nuclear program. Lula, Singh and South African President Jacob Zuma "recognized the right of Iran to develop nuclear programs for peaceful purposes," and underlined "the need for a peaceful and diplomatic solution of the issue." That language, however, was noticeably missing from the BRIC statement. The leaders decided to not discuss Iran in their plenary session "but rather concentrate on issues relating to global governance," said Brazil's presidential adviser on international affairs, Marco Aurelio Garcia. Russia and to a lesser extent China -- both veto-wielding permanent members of the UN Security Council -- have reduced their resistance to the sanctions push in recent weeks. But Brazil, a non-permanent member of the Security Council, has resolutely defended Iran. "Our impression... is that the effectiveness of sanctions is debatable," Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim told reporters, adding that Lula had set out that position in talks with the leaders of China and India. "President Lula gave an explanation, to provide better transparency, on what we've done in relation with Iran. And we see great affinity with the points of view of each country," Amorim said. Lula also discussed the issue with Medvedev, Brazilian officials told . The United States, Britain, France and Germany have been urging the BRIC nations to support sanctions against Iran.

Milli Vanilli Movie

Milli Vanilli. A decorated film-maker is taking on the story of shamed German pop duo Milli Vanilli. The band, featuring Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan, was a huge hit after being formed in 1988, but had a dramatic fall from favour after it was discovered the pair lip-synched to the voices of The Numarks, a group which included executive Kevil Liles of Def Jam Records. They were forced to hand back a Grammy award they won in 1990 for Best New Artist, faced several lawsuits, and a campign to refund consumers. An album featuring their real voices flopped, and their downfall was followed by Pilatus' descent into personal problems, including drug abuse. He died, apparently as a result of a alcohol and drug overdose, on the eve of a promotional tour for a comeback album, in 1998. Fab has continued to work as a recording artist and DJ.Now, German director Florian Gallenberger is set to take on a big screen biopic about the pair, reports Allhiphop. Advertisement: Story continues below Gallenberger, a former actor and philosophy student, won an Academy Award in 2001 in the Best Live Action Short Film category for his short film Quiero Rosetta Stone V3 Ser (I want to be...), which was set in Mexico. He has directed two features: Shadows of Time, an epic about India made in the Bengali language, and John Rabe, about a German businessman who created a Safety Zone in Nanking which saved 200,000 Chinese people during the second World War. The film won 4 German Academy Awards, including best film. The sensitive cables also reflected a view that China may be growing more open to the North eventually being absorbed by the South. The spike in tensions comes as North Korea's Kim, 68, is thought to be in poor health and readying to hand over power to his son Kim Jong-Un, who two months ago assumed a top military post at the age of 27. The Korea Times in Seoul, in an editorial on the WikiLeaks revelations, warned about "the North Korean leadership's response when they learn about the 'betrayal' of their most important ally". "Would Pyongyang behave well now that they have lost their biggest patron, or turn even more provocative to the verge of desperation and national suicide?" the English-language daily said. "By most accounts, the latest revelation of diplomatic secrets illustrates how fragile is the peace on which the Koreas stand. This is time to recall the adage that the worst peace is better than the best war."

Mexico City Teams with IBM to Integrate New Software Programs and

The Department of Education of the Federal District announced that it has entered into a partnership with IBM aimed at advancing education in the capital and offering Mexico City's children a better future. According to a release, IBM will donate its "Reading Companion" software program to improve the English-language programs offered at Mexico City's high schools, as well as the company's "Little Explorer" learning modules, which will expand computer-based learning resources available to preschool students throughout the capital."This partnership is another example of how the Government of the Federal District continues to take action to strengthen our city's schools," said Mario Delgado Carillo, Education Secretary of the Federal District. "With these new technologies, we will further augment the quality of the education students receive in Mexico City." Secretary Delgado continued, "We are encouraging students to learn English and are providing them with access to the best resources in the world. The children of Mexico City have incredible talent and they are going to continue to work hard. This new partnership with IBM is about ensuring they have Rosetta Stone French the opportunity to grow in their academic pursuits." IBM's donation of the Reading Companion software will provide the opportunity for over 20,000 students at every secondary school campus in Mexico City to learn English in a more dynamic way. Reading Companion is an invaluable resource to learn and teach English as a second language. The software gives teachers the ability to keep accurate records of every student's progress, enabling them to tailor teaching efforts to the needs of each student's individual needs in a more personalized way. In addition, the Department of Education noted that the Little Explorer module is a multi-faceted, interactive learning software that offers lesson plans to reinforce the disciplines of mathematics, basic science and literacy in preschool students. IBM's donation will expand the technological resources available at Mexico City's Child Development Centers and allow more than 2,000 preschool children to benefit from the enriched curriculum the Little Explorer provides. IBM donated 100 interactive modules to the Child Development Centers in Mexico City, accompanied by an equal number of instruction manuals developed by the National Council for the Promotion of Education "for teachers to link activities software with the official program of study." Secretary Delgado added, "These two programs will significantly augment Mexico City's education system. Going forward, we will build on this partnership with IBM and continue to improve our schools so students are equipped to take advantage of greater opportunities in the future.

It's evolving and gelling really well

And they haven't even released an EP yet. We had a sneak peek at the self-titled debut, released next week, and couldn't get enough of the lead track, a breezy, sun-kissed folk-pop ditty called Bed Down. ''I went travelling for a year and wrote a whole bunch of really different-sounding songs to what I'd been doing previously and they needed that collaborative effort, so I formed a different group to get it across the way I wanted,'' Pollard says. ''It's really about serving the song in a different way. It's evolving and gelling really well.'' TONIGHT ALIVE Genre Mainstream pop-punk.From Sydney's Hills District. Label Sony.Coming gigs May 27, 7.30pm, Metro Theatre, city, 9550 3666, $28.70 (supporting Amy Meredith). As far as musical about-faces go, they don't come much more extreme than switching from drumming in a jazz outfit to fronting an exhilarating pop-punk mob. That's what happened to Jenna McDougall in the two years between her meeting bass player Cameron Adler and him and his mates inviting her to sing for their then fledgling band, Tonight Alive, in 2008. Three years later, the Sydney five-piece have funded, recorded and sold more than 20,000 copies of their debut EP, All ShapesDisguises, signed a deal with record company giant Sony Music and spent the past few months in Los Angeles recording their imminent debut album with producer Mark Trombino (Blink-182, Jimmy Eat World). ''I think [going to] the US was the best thing we've ever done,'' says McDougall, who is, admittedly, still only 18. ''Everyone just worked really well together and I think the album is probably going to be everything we wanted it to be.'' The first single from it, Wasting Away, provides a shamelessly catchy signpost to what to expect - and Tonight Alive make no apologies for that. ''I don't think it's Rosetta Stone Japanese something you can deny, really,'' McDougall says. ''It sort of just came out of us and we weren't gonna try and push it away. ''We all listen to punk, we all listen to metal but you can't escape pop - and I don't think it's such a bad idea to infuse the two.'' THE LAST KINECTION Genre Indigenous hip-hop.From Two live in Newcastle, one lives in Cairns. Label Elefant Traks.Coming gigs March 26, 10am-6pm, Platform Hip-Hop Festival at the Block, Redfern, free. To describe siblings Naomi and Joel Wenitong and their DJ pal Jacob Turier as enjoying a resurrection with their crew the Last Kinection isn't far from the truth - literally as well as creatively. Not only were they all previously successful with other outfits (Naomi with the RB-pop confection Shakaya, Joel and Turier with indigenous hip-hop trailblazers Local Knowledge), they were lucky to survive a horrendous car crash in 2008. Now working on their second - and likely breakthrough - album, Next of Kin, they're on to what Joel describes as ''the happy half''. ''The first half was songs we wrote after the car accident, so they were kind of pretty intense,'' he says. ''We are up to some more upbeat, kind of 'I survived' songs now.'' Proudly Aboriginal, the Last Kinection's heritage not only informs their funky, forward-thinking but accessible hip-hop, Wenitong believes it makes them unique. ''It's just who we are,'' he says. ''It opens up so much more, I guess, originality in the music and so many more areas that no one else does do or even can do, for that matter. The songs we've been working on now, we've just been putting some [Aboriginal] language, lingo chants over the top and it just sounds like nothing else - and it means something, as well, to us.'

A few months later, she started as chief executive for Dinnigan

It turned out to be a terrific opportunity for me and for the company. “Turning that company around to be one of the leading profit producers was a terrific result. I guess the achievement feels even greater when the market is saying it cannot be done.” She did the same thing at Conde Nast Australia in 1999 when she started as managing editor during a time that the chairman of Conde Nast International, Jonathan Newstead, described as “dire”, when circulation figures were down and advertisers were losing confidence in the company. “Morale was shot and rumours about what would happen to Vogue Australia and its sister magazines were rife,” Newstead says. “Because Australia is so far away, I didn't comprehend or address the problems as quickly as I should have done. “Robyn understood the Vogue brand and how to position and market a luxury product. Most of all, she is a true leader, with tons of energy, self confidence and the ability to motivate and inspire others. In a few short years, she completely turned around the business.” As a result of this success, Holt was tapped on the shoulder and asked to head Conde Nast Russia. She and her husband moved to Moscow, leaving Hannah in boarding school. “When I was first offered Russia, my husband said without hesitation: 'You must take it and we will make it work,' ” Holt recalls. “I have to say at this point he is a Chekhov authority, so he was very happy. I really could not have made it work if it were not for my husband and Rowena Danziger who was the then headmistress of Ascham [boarding school], who stepped into the parental role of Rosetta Stone HindiHannah.” In Moscow, Holt had daily language lessons in Russian and ran international magazines such as Vogue, Architectural Digest, GQ and launched Glamour, which she proudly says sold 600,000 copies in the first two issues, making it the largest-selling fashion title in Europe. “I was fortunate to have all the senior staff speak English and, after three years, I could hold a conversation in Russian, albeit, not a very sophisticated one,” she says, adding that not learning a second language until then is her biggest regret. “In this role was where I really learnt to listen, not just to words but also with body language. “Jim taught me a lot about communication, especially that it is a lot more than words. I went to theatre and in the early days I didn't understand it but it gave me the opportunity to watch people around me.” After three years, Holt left to live in London where she launched Monocle magazine. She then returned to Australia to be near her father, who was unwell, and Hannah, who was finishing her last year at university. A few months later, she started as chief executive for Dinnigan. Holt recently took up her first job in the public sector, a one-year posting at the NSW State Library leading a project to mark the Mitchell Library's 100th anniversary, which the library's chief executive, Regina Sutton, hopes will rebrand the institution. Sutton says she recruited Holt for the very reason that she was “a creative force with wide experience”. Celebrations of the centenary will begin on March 9 next year with a 100-day exhibition of 100 items that are significant to Australia and Australians. Some items will be part of a travelling exhibition to regional areas of NSW. “I feel as though this is my greatest role because it is one [in which] I come to work each day and learn something new every day,” she says. Holt wishes that, when she was 30, she had known that confidence in one's instincts can lead to great things. “The one thing that has kept me going through all the difficult times and, yes, there have been many, is my sense of humour, not taking myself too seriously and having a great family,” she says. “And, finally, an unending curiosity.”

She's a boisterous kid who enjoys killing bad guys

Tweenage riot...Hit-Girl, played by Chloe Moretz, gives a film-stealing performance. Reviewer rating: Rating: 35 out of 5 stars Reader rating: Rating: 35 out of 5 stars (300 votes) Genre Fantasy Running time 117 min Actors Nicolas Cage, Chloe Moretz, Mark Strong, Aaron Johnson Director Matthew Vaughn Screen writer Jane Goldman, based on the comic book series by Mark Millar OFLC rating MA 15 Year Language English DVD Release 25 March (MA) General release (117 minutes) SHOOT the well-worn conventions of your standard superhero movie through the prism of media-savvy geek culture and you get Kick-Ass, an extremely funny, extremely violent, gloriously foul-mouthed and decidedly adult comic-book adventure that offers the most refreshing reboot of the genre since 's Hancock. Directed with verve and frictionless pace by Matthew Vaughn (Stardust, Layer Cake), the film is a jokey thrill ride of cartoonish excess as we follow the loopy trajectory of Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a typical teen nerd who decides to make up for his shortcomings by becoming a superhero. Advertisement: Story continues below His initial attempt doesn't go so well and lands him in traction where selective nerve damage raises his pain threshold to near-superhero levels and metal plates reinforce his fractured skeleton. Being a dweeb, he, of course, notes the Wolverine parallel Rosetta Stone Portuguese half a second before we do, though thankfully the film's frequent riffs on superhero lore never ferment into parody. On his next crime-fighting venture, Dave, dressed in a self-designed suit, dispatches a gang with the aid of his new found ''powers''. The event is captured on a mobile phone, is promptly uploaded to YouTube and Kick-Ass is born. Thing is, the city already has two self-appointed crime fighters: Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and his tweenage daughter Hit-Girl (Chloe Moretz in a fabulous film-stealing performance). He's an ex-cop eager to bring order to the city that claimed his wife. She's a boisterous kid who enjoys killing bad guys. It's when Kick-Ass gets in over his head while dealing with a stumblebum mobster (Mark Strong) and his morally conflicted son (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) that the daddy-daughter duo enter the fray, with Hit-Girl relishing the opportunity to slice, dice and shoot her way through the film's villains. All too predictably, a low-rent controversy has been stirred up over the film's MA15 rating, which some groups think is too mild for a film that features a tween girl shooting, killing and saying the C-word. The fear is that the classification, which allows kids under 15 to see the film with adults, potentially exposes the film to children. What nanny-state nonsense. The rating highlights the film's ''strong violence, coarse language and sexual references'' and unambiguously signals that Kick-Ass is not suitable for children. The suggestion that only a hard R rating can make that clear sadly highlights the need for people to take full responsibility for what their kids see.

Google pushing to make inroads into SKorea

The world's top Internet search engine Google Wednesday stressed its determination to make greater inroads into South Korea where some 70 percent of homes have high-speed Internet access but many prefer local service providers. "It's obvious to me that Korea is a great laboratory of the digital age," said Google chairman Eric Schmidt, praising its high level of broadband and wireless Internet access. Schmidt announced the launch of a new modified Korean-language search site to help beat local rivals during a keynote speech to the Seoul Digital Forum. Advertisement: Story continues below "This is a big big day for Google," he said. "Google is in Korea because Korea is important and our commitment and the scale we're going to operate in is just beginning." The California-based IT colossus has been less successful in South Korea than elsewhere in the world. The fresh site deviates from the previous version, which featured just a simple search box, by adding graphics features -- an animated main menu and product buttons -- above and below the box. Google launched a Korean-language search site in 00 but has been striving to boost its presence against competition from local firms like Naver. South Korean users say their needs are better met by Naver -- run by the country's largest portal NHN -- and other local search engines. Lee Won-Jin, head of Google Korea, said his unit had spent years learning from local rivals about users' needs. "We think we are ready now to provide a service to meet their needs." Google opened a research and development center here in 06. Schmidt on Tuesday met Seok Rosetta Stone English Jong-Hun, head of South Korea's second-largest portal Daum Communications, to discuss ways to expand a burgeoning partnership, especially in the fast growing online video content market. Google and Daum agreed last December to cooperate in the online advertisement market. Daum is running Google's cost-per-click search ads, one of the fastest-growing types of Internet advertising. Daum is now also interested in using the content on Google's YouTube, the world's most popular online video-sharing service. Daum says it controls a quarter of South Korea's video content market and is in a tight race with rival Pandora TV to become the leader. Schmidt said in his speech that Google's technological evolution and business success would continue. "I think the Internet is a platform. I think Google is everywhere," he said. "A goal, we could say, will be one -- Google is as ubiquitious as brushing your teeth. The platform of information is always available to you whatever you are doing." He said Google's proposed 3.1 billion dollar takeover of online ad firm DoubleClick would be clinched by the end of this year, dismissing concerns over the US Federal Trade Commission's scrutiny of the deal. He said Google could help make society more transparent and democratic through providing better and greater public access to information. "The impact of citizens having more information is overwhelmingly positive," he said. "I can imagine a product that would simply tell you whether it is a politician who is telling the truth because Google can remember what that politician said.

A feast for the senses

A photograph in Shirley Hazzard's memoir, Greene onCapri, shows her friend Graham Greene at their favouriterestaurant on the island in 1987. The English writer sits at acorner table against a rustic wall hung with copper pans andsmiles, presumably at Hazzard and her husband, Francis Steegmuller. With Greene's companion, they made a foursome "at our firesidetable in the inner room at Gemma's restaurant" for many years. Having savoured Hazzard's account of an exotic, elegant, literary life from another age, I had a real taste of it in theearly autumn of 06. At the corner table under the shining copperat Da Gemma, I shared a pitcher of wine, a margherita pizza fromthe ancient woodfired oven and shellfish-studded pasta with myhusband and Hazzard, a friend from our days of living in NewYork. The scene was incomplete because Gemma, Greene and most recentlySteegmuller had died. The conversation might have been lesserudite. But we had the great fortune of visiting Capri with awoman whose knowledge of the island is intimate andintelligent. Advertisement: Story continues below Hazzard, the author of acclaimed novels such as The Transitof Venus and The Great Fire, has been visiting Caprifor 50 years since she was an Australian expatriate seconded fromthe United Nations in New York to war-savaged Naples. With Steegmuller, an American writer and translator, she livedbetween New York and, in spring and autumn - avoiding summer'scrowds and winter's desolation - Capri and Naples. She has kept upthe rhythm since his death years ago. Much of her writing hasbeen done in Italy, away from "the surf" of Manhattan, and some isset there. Our journey together began in Rome where, appropriately, shestayed above the Spanish Steps in her usual room at the HasslerHotel, while we found our place at the bottom of the steps Rosetta Stone Italian in themore modest Hotel Madrid. Together we walked through the late duskto her local, old-Rome restaurants, where the food and staff neverchange: Otello, Nino and Caffe del Greco, a favourite with Casanovaafter its opening in 1760 and now with the Japanese. We explored the city with The Companion Guide to Rome,Georgina Masson's 1965 (and since updated) book, given to us byHazzard as the best authority. Often she dropped notes at our hotelabout the evening's plans or an "essential" - a visit to the churchof San Clemente ("a self-contained history of Rome"). She wasright: after a chat with the Irish Dominican fathers in the living11th-century basilica, we descended into the 4th- and 1st-centuryplaces of worship below. The Little Sisters of the Lamb sang theirharmonic prayers for us at the neighbouring convent. One morning Hazzard's regular driver packed us all into his carand headed south. Hazzard kept up a stream of stories: from theAbbey of Monte Cassino, where hundreds of civilians were killedduring air raids in 19, to the trained bagsnatchers of Torre delGreco outside Naples. "If you carry a camera, I will not be responsible," she warned.Steegmuller once published an account of his own violent mugging inNaples. Peter Robb, the Australian author of Midnight inSicily, had groaned when I told him we were headed for Naples. He is working on a book about the city - long associated withorganised crime, poverty and southern rawness - and noted "adramatic shift in its equilibrium lately". Crowded jails hadreleased their murderers; cheap cocaine was fuelling teenage gangs;tourists were being caught in crossfire.

In this Chinese fable the chicken upsets the fox in his lair

Illustration: Rocco Fazzari Kevin Rudd studied China's most famous political prisoner, Wei Jingsheng, for his university thesis. Today Wei Jingsheng studies Kevin Rudd. The Chinese Government is putting the Australian Government through a trial with the arrest of Stern Hu, Wei said this week through an interpreter. Wei has a bit of experience with the Chinese justice system - he spent 18 years in jail and now lives in exile in the US. Stern Hu, an iron ore negotiator for Rio Tinto, was arrested for allegedly stealing state secrets. So was Wei, an electrician at the Beijing Zoo at the time. Advertisement: Story continues below I was locked up because I offended Deng Xiaoping [China's leader at the time]. But of course they fabricated a charge that I stole state secrets - this is the approach the Chinese Government likes to take with people to put them down. And under the Chinese Communist Party the state can classify anything it likes as a state secret, even the most innocuous information, at any time and on any whim. It's obvious now the Chinese Government is attempting to put down the Australian Government, not Stern Hu. And it's quite evident that it is putting down the Australian Government as a precedent for other governments around the world. Wei, who is visiting Australia, embraces the metaphor in the old Chinese folk saying - kill the chicken to frighten the monkey. Australia is the chicken. Who is the monkey? The first monkey is Europe, targeted after Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France and chair of the European Union at the time, decided to meet the Dalai Lama last year. China reacted with Rosetta Stone Spain Spanish the fury it always employs when heads of government recognise the exiled leader of the Tibetan campaign for autonomy from China. And the biggest monkey is the US. But if China wants to make an example of someone, why choose Australia? Wei lists three reasons: Australia has a prime minister who thinks he knows a lot about China, when actually he doesn't. Because Kevin Rudd has many relationships with China, the Chinese Government is hoping that because of these ties he will not make a strong reaction. Second, historically, Australia is one of the weakest countries in dealing with China. Third, Australia is just a small place. Wei wants Australia to understand that it is engaged in a high-stakes struggle. The chicken and the fox - his animal metaphor for China because it is cunning and invasive - have co-existed peacefully for years, but now the situation has changed. I think the chicken is in shock. It's still deciding whether it wants to put up a fight. If it doesn't fight it will be killed. But it may not realise it has a sharp beak and it can fight back. Wei is wrong on these assertions. Rudd and his senior ministers set out very deliberately to change Australia's policy in dealing with China. The Rudd Government understands very well that it is the target of Chinese anger. And the Government is keenly aware that Australia has serious leverage in the relationship - it knows it has a sharp beak. But Wei's misapprehension is quite understandable. Rudd has never articulated an overall Australian approach. The Foreign Minister, Stephen Smith, really only started to speak about the dispute openly this week.

Our sporting diplomats

There are many superlatives to describe the achievement of Cadel Evans as the first Australian winner of the Tour de France. If the pundits are correct, Evans will now catapult into superstar status in Europe and other nations around the world, as well as in Australia. Very few Australian sports stars achieve global recognition but those who have bear witness to the great responsibilities that come with that recognition. Advertisement: Story continues below Whether he seeks it or not, Evans will be seen as an ambassador for Australia and Australian values. In many respects his story to success is typically Australian. Born in Katherine in the Northern Territory, Cadel Evans began his life in an improbable location for an eventual winner of the Tour de France. His family relocated to the NSW city of Armidale where a young Cadel Evans first became interested in cycling, principally mountain bike racing. He overcame the challenges of living in regional Australia to qualify for the Australian Institute of Sport mountain bike team where he enjoyed significant success. Evans reportedly wanted a new challenge and converted to road racing in 00. The path to his success at this year's Tour de France was not smooth. He suffered injury and disappointment along the way, with two second places in years when he was considered a potential favourite. This year he was written off by many as too old and having missed his opportunity. There is nothing an Australian likes more than to be written off by competitors. Underdog status is often keenly sought after. Australians will embrace Cadel Evans as Rosetta Stone Spanish Latin the quintessential Aussie battler who overcame the doubters and the seemingly insurmountable challenges to finally triumph against the odds. In many respects, his story is the story of our nation. With our convict beginnings, our distance and harsh climate, the ability to overcome obstacles is often seen as a hallmark of the Australian character. One area of potential for stronger international relations that we should harness as a nation is our global reputation for sporting achievement. Cadel Evans will become a household name in Europe just as he is in Australia. It is hoped that not only will he inspire cycling enthusiasts, but also use his influence as a role model in a broader sense. During a recent visit to Papua New Guinea I was struck by the overwhelming influence of Queensland's rugby league stars. It is no exaggeration to say that Mal Meninga has demi-god status for many in PNG. I met with the manager of a huge construction company who related how his 00 workers refused to go back to work on the day of a visit to the site by Meninga, such was their determination to see and hopefully touch their idol. I was told by astute observers of PNG culture that the rugby league State of Origin Series has the power to unite the nation like no other issue. A deeply tribal country with over 800 languages, where family and tribe loyalty comes first and last, it seems the people of PNG are at one in their love of rugby league. It was reported to me that when PNG trialled a preferential voting system, voting slips bearing the faces of Queensland icons, Meninga, Wally Lewis and Darren Lockyer, were used as the mock candidates, rather than local politicians, to be sure of a strong voter turnout for the test run. Some people were reportedly deeply disappointed to find that they had not in fact voted in Meninga as national leader.

Steaming into the bosom of mediocrity

Click for more photos Logie Awards Brynne Edelston has some finishing touches on the red carpet. Photo: Penny Stephens IN A shifting, sliding world full of exploding volcanoes and crumbling governments, the 52nd Annual TV Week Logie Awards (Sunday, 7.30pm on Nine) reflected the words of that popular wartime slogan: Keep calm and carry on. As we, the audience, kept calmand by calm I mean we were tranquilised by hours of mediocre entertainment into a deep, soporific statethe Australian television industry carried on. And oh, what a carry-on it was.I hadnt ever watched an entire Logies ceremony all the way through until this one. Id always chosen life instead. But after hearing so much lately about how stale and meaningless the event has become, I thought to myself: there must be something good to be said about the Logies! Today, I can joyfully report back that, yes, there are definitely one or two things. Here goes ...One. The Logies really are outlandishly inventive. For example, most of us would be too intimidated by the English language to apply a word like glamour to this event, mainly because weve been taught that words are supposed to actually mean things.Looking at all the evidence sashaying in front of us, you or I might decide to describe it as teeming with collarbones, perhaps, or maybe even spray-tans, or uni-sleeves. But teeming with glamour? That just insane. And yet glamour is the very word chosen imaginatively by red carpet hosts and commentators of the Logies time and again. You can only be wowed by that sort of creative flair.Two. You cant deny Rosetta Stone outlet there a plucky, adventurous spirit to the Logies. Once again, most of us at home would humbly defer to the dictionary for matters of spelling, but during the in memoriam tribute, the Nine Network threw all notions of tradition out the window, favouring to spell the word as memorium instead of memoriam. Everyone understandably burst into tears when that word flashed up on screen. But were we grieving for our beloved, departed television stars, or for the future of spelling? It was hard to say.Luckily, we, the audience at home, also had some made-up words of our own to bandy aroundwords like LOL and WTF, both of which became increasingly useful as the show went on and on.So it wasnt until about halfway through that I finally started to understand the paradoxical truth of the matter; the secret that everyone else seemed to know already. That while you dont need to sit through the Logies in order to make fun of them, you really do need to make fun of the Logies in order to sit through them. But you mustnt listen to a word I say, of course, because there really were some nice moments. Accepting his Logie for most popular presenter, the brilliant Shaun Micallef managed to take the piss out of the award while at the same time appearing genuinely chuffed to receive it. That talent right there. It was also refreshing to hear most outstanding actor winner, Don Hany from SBS East West 101, thank the writers of the show and express in quite beautiful terms how much he loved his job.And despite a style that was occasionally lumbering, Bert Newton was a charming and natural host, as youd expect after the 100 or so goes he had at it. He was definitely the second-best thing about the Logies.

How To Prevent Disaster At Your Outdoor Wedding

Lots of couple these days are deciding on outdoor weddings just to get away from the traditional church wedding. One of the big benefits to outdoor weddings is that they are much less expensive and sometimes cost nothing. These events take some special planning to be sure they go off without a hitch while you are getting hitched. For example, if you are being married in a public place you will most likely have to hold the reception in another location. Weather is also a huge concern, if you live in an area prone to hurricanes like Florida you may want to have a backup plan if you are getting married during hurricane season! Here are some guidelines to keep in mind while planning your big day.The location you choose is the most crucial part on an outdoor wedding and if you are choosing a true outdoor locale like a beach or lake then you need to be sure that you have shelter available in case of rain. Considering that you plan the event months ahead of time there is no way of knowing what the weather will be like on that particular day. So be sure to have your option B ready in case Mother Nature is being uncooperative. You could also opt for a home wedding around a pool; I have attended weddings like this that are very beautiful. If you are holding the event at a beach or park check with the city or county government to see if they require any kind of permit. Sometimes you only have to get written permission but other times you may have to have a specific permit. Some other things you need to know are whether you can decorate and bring your own tables and Rosetta Stone chairs, if you can serve food, have music, etc. If your reception will be at the same place and you will be serving alcohol you need to find out if it is allowed. Many parks and beaches do not allow alcohol to be consumed on their grounds. This will prevent any unpleasant situations on your special day, so take the time to plan it properly. If you are planning to be married outside you can take advantage of natural beauty which will save you some money on floral arrangements and other decorations. Just be sure that if you are using a public location or one run by local government that you have permission to put up any decorations. Most will allow you to decorate but you have to make sure that you take all of it with you when you leave. Make sure that you let your guests know ahead of time that the event will be held outside so that they can plan accordingly. You don’t want people coming thinking they are going to be inside and not be clothed properly or otherwise prepared for the elements.Be prepared for foul weather if you have your mind set on a place like the beach and be sure that everyone in the wedding party has lightweight clothes that will dry easily if you get wet. You should also abort the idea of a fancy long dress with a train because if it rains it will just get wet and muddy. Be prepared and have a fun special day!

Once you have set the date, start the process of searching out your wedding photographer. Those who are good at what they do are going to have a busy schedule and you want to get on that schedule as soon as possible.2.Hiring a Photographer Outside of Your Price Range? While you don't want to compromise quality, you also may have a budget to stay within. Ask plenty of questions regarding fees so that you can stay within your price range when hiring a photographer. Your photographer will likely require a deposit to hold your wedding date. Never agree to pay the entire fee for your wedding photography package up front. The balance of the fee should only be paid after the wedding, once you have seen and received your proofs. How much should you pay? Price ranges for photographers vary dramatically. You are paying for your photographer's experience, style, reputation, as well as overhead costs. Don't despair if your budget is limited, just keep looking. You will also want to make sure you understand how re-orders of photos will be handled. Will the photographer keep the negatives, as many do, or will he turn the negatives over to you as part of the package? Today, however, it is not entirely uncommon for some professional photographers to turn over the negatives with the Language Learning Software customer's purchase of the first set of prints. Without a signed contract and a paid deposit, that 'hold' is as good as nothing at all. A contract and paid deposit are the only security you have that the photographer is indeed reserved for you. Read through the contract and make sure you understand it? Is everything spelled out? What does it say about cancellations and the photographer not being there? If the photographer protests, ask him why? This is one area not to take lightly.4.Not Examining The Photographer's Style - Every photographer has his or her own unique style. Are the images that you are shown what you would like to see? There are different styles of photographer including photojournalistic, formal, classic candid, and so on. Do you want a mixture of black and white or only color photos? Keep shopping until you find a photographer who style matches your own.5.Not Asking For References or Reviewing The Photographer's Portfolio - Look at the photographer's portfolio and ask for personal references. You want to make sure this person is consistent in their work and references will help you determine this. You also want to make sure that the photographer is easy to get along with and that his or her past clients didn't have problems with them. A photographer who doesn't have references or is afraid to give them to you may not be the person that you need to hire. This isn't to say that it's never okay to hire a less experienced wedding photographer. Decorating Tips For Holiday Family vacation Homes

Holidays orvacation homes are meant for recharging your batteries and getting entertaining, not for piles of dirty washing and cleansing. Mother has to take it easy too. So make it to ensure that housework could be stored to a minimum; when designing the decor for a vacation property make certain that every little thing is simple to thoroughly clean. If it does not clean up with a wipe it should be machine washable. It's also a very good strategy to reduce down strain; do that by removing pointless clutter, it might appear attractive but if there are kids about, accidents will occur.at the beach, at a lake, somewhere in which you appreciate the scenery. Come home & study it, get paint colors from the DIY store and work out a palette from which to work. Require your colors from nature or use a colour wheel. Doing this makes you look at shade in a different way. If you've chosen a warm location, cool colors might be the way to go, or choose something darker than you would normally to create a tropical mood. Ideally pick a single theme and coloration scheme for the whole property. If you've never decorated a space having a theme, now is the time.Vacation homes don't need to be taken so seriously so indulge yourself and choose something you delight in. If your vacation homes property is near the sea, a beach theme would be appropriate, choose white wicker furniture with blue or aqua cushions and decorate with sea shells. If you're lucky enough to own a tropical hideaway, dark bamboo furniture with dark red cushions and lush (but silk) Rosetta Stone Portuguese plants will set the scene, or perhaps you'd rather get the cottage look with flowery cushions and pale rattan, flower pictures on the walls and plenty of lamps and vases.Wicker and rattan furniture is ideal because of the beautiful cushions and the durability of the furniture; it also gives any space a wonderful light, airy feeling which, again, helps to cut down tension. Be sure to use washable paint, it will stay fresh and last longer. Begin with the entry way, if it can be properly lit use the deepest shade inside your chosen palette, this makes a statement as you come in. If you have niches make them lighter, the dining space if it comes next could be the same colour as the entry way or the shade lighter as it will have its own lighting and with the addition of two candle lamps, it will be an ideal setting for romantic dinners. The staircase if there is one, must not be as well light if you can find children, try as you could possibly you won't keep finger marks off theluxury vacation homesthere but do see that it really is well lit. If the family space comes next make it a lighter shade and choose the most eye catching wall to paint with one of the deeper colors as a contrast to match the cushions you have chosen. Add accessories according to your theme, candles to add accent colors, lush dark green plants for the topics or delicate ferns and flowers for a cottage. Glass dishes or jars filled with shells are ideal for a seashore theme and look pretty on a coffee table. If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace add a wicker basket holding logs on the side, a lamp or perhaps two and your space is done.

Finding Hot Adventure Travel Spots

What does the term adventure travel mean to you? It can mean many different things to different people and for those that are uninitiated into the world of adventure travel it often involves Indiana Jones types of images. Things like Man against nature, struggling to cross a scorching desert, or a stormy sea. Possible risking their life in some far flung region of the world that is torn apart by war and strife. Or it might bring up images of crawling deep into a pitch black cave or dangling from the site of a mountain on a rope. Do all of these images equate to adventure travel? Well, not really, some people that are into adventure travel might seek out some of these more extreme types of activities but not everyone. Adventure travel is really whatever you want it to be. It might or might not involve physical risk this is not a requirement. It might or might not mean traveling to an exotic far flung place. It might or might not cost a small fortune it really depends on you. Any time you travel somewhere, anywhere if you have a new experience that you have never had before or some type of new experience that you don't do everyday then you have had an adventure. Of course there are as many different types of adventure travel as there are people in the world. So often you can find something that is exciting to you and based on your own interests. For example a history buff might not be the least interested in a vacation in Las Vegas or a visit to Disney World. But he or she might be thrilled to tour the Tower of London, visit the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, or Rosetta Stone stand at the Irish graveside of some long dead ancestor. The discovery of some previously unknown ancestors name in the archival records of a small town can be as exciting for the history lover as catching a trophy rainbow trout is to an ardent fisherman. While most people would agree that adventure travel that involves activities like sky diving, mountain climbing, kayaking the rapids or caving is an exciting adventure indeed. But adventure travel can also include a leisurely trip on the Mississippi River in a paddle wheeler, a saunter across the English landscape in search of a certain species of bird, a tour of the wineries of southern France, or a shell-collecting outing on an out-of-the-way Caribbean beach.Adventure travel does not have to be to a far away place. You do not have to go by plane, train or bus to experience some adventure travel. There are many opportunities well within driving distance of your house. They are not as well revealed as major sites or operations, so people have to look for them. They can include small local museums, houses of special interest (the birthplace of a famous person), small sanctuaries for wildlife and flora, restored buildings or even communities dating back to historic times, and so on. Even if one does not own a car, there are sometimes local bus tours to this site, or excursions organized by social groups.Sure adventure travel might take you to that far flung place on a crazy intense adventure and test of wills but it can just as easily be a trip to somewhere close to your home and local. Adventure travel is wherever you can find it and on whatever scale you are ready for.
