Minister is keen user of Twitter By David Ljunggren OTTAWA, May 18 (Reuters) - Canada's Rosetta Stone V3 new Treasury Boardpresident, Tony Clement, is a fanatical Twitter user who hashandled some of the Conservative government's toughest fileswithout suffering much political damage. Clement will be in overall charge of managing governmentspending. Previously industry minister, he was named to his newpost in a cabinet shuffle on Wednesday. Last November, he controversially blocked a $39 billiontakeover bid by Anglo-Australian miner BHP Billiton (BHP.AX)(BLT.L) for Canadian fertilizer producer Potash Corp (POT.TO). Clement said the deal would not be of net benefit toCanada, prompting complaints from some quarters that he hadtarnished the government's pro-business slant. The diminutive50-year-old, known for delivering a pithy quote, dismissed thecriticism. "I think that's ridiculous. You can't say we've becomeVenezuela because of one decision," he told Reuters shortlyafter announcing the veto. He is sometimes named as a possible contender to run forthe leadership of the Conservatives once Prime Minister StephenHarper leaves his post. Unlike Rosetta Stone language software some of his rivals, he is fluentin French, Canada's second official language. Clement became federal industry minister in October 2008and quickly found himself at the heart of Ottawa's move toprovide billions of dollars in loans to help struggling automakers General Motors and Chrysler. Although the Conservatives have traditionally decried statesupport for corporations, Clement said the country's economywould have suffered enormous damage without government helpgoing to the large auto sector. Never one to shy away from trouble, he sparked outrageamong academics and experts in 2010 by canceling the mandatorylong-form census on the grounds that it was too intrusive. Clement is an avid user of the social networking toolTwitter and sends out a stream of jocular and offbeat messages,many of them gently self-mocking. His willingness to answerquestions from journalists and followers on Twitter has helpedcreate a favorable image in the media. "His current attempts to master rock guitar are a work inprogress, meaning there are no imminent plans to changecareers," reads one entry on his official website. When the Conservatives took power in 2006, Clement wasnamed health minister. He had previously served as theProgressive Conservative health minister in the province Rosetta Stone Arabic V3 ofOntario during a fatal outbreak of the respiratory disease SARSin 2003.
